Religious Spots in Punjab

  • Golden Temple:- The spiritual centre of the Sikh religion, the Golden temple was built in between 1589 and 1601.

Historical Monuments

  • Govindgarh Fort:- This 19th century fort designed by Maharaja Ranjit Singh had special defence mechanism against artillery attacks, which were frequent when Punjab was still open to depredationsof the Afghan hordes
  • Sarai Amanat Khan:- This elegant caravanserai, just 40 km from the Amritsar city, was built by the calligrapher of Taj Mahal.
  • Jallianwala Bagh Martyr's Memorial:- Jallianwala Bagh has a special importance attached with India’s struggle for independence.

  • Hari-ke-pattan:- Hari-ke-Pattan is a natural serene place famous for its bird sanctuary. It is located on the outskirts of the city, at the confluence of the rivers Beas and Sutlej. Winter (November-onwards) is characterized by migratory birds,
  • Wagah Border:- Wagah is an army outpost on Indo-Pak border, just 9 km from Amritsar city. It is a ceremonial border,
  • Tarn Taran:- This dusty little town situated on the edge of an enormous tank is just 21 km from Amritsar.

Fairs and Festivals in Punjab

  • Lohri :- Celebrated on the 13th day of January, Lohri is a festival of zeal and verve and marks the culmination of the chilly winter.
  • Muktsar Fair :- The festival is in commemoration of a battle fought in 1705-06 by Guru Gobind Singh against the imperial forces of the Moguls and pays tribute to the forty Sikhs who achieved martyrdom on this day.
  • Basant Panchami :- Basant Panchami is the most famous of the seasonal fairs and marks the advent of spring.
  • Baisakhi :- Baisakhi marks the jubilation of a bountiful harvest and is celebrated on the first day of the month of Baisakh (April/May).
  • The Rauza Sharif 'Urs' :- Rauza Sharif ‘Urs’ is celebrated in the memory of great Sufi Saint Sheikh Ahmad Farooqui Sirhindi on May 31 every year.

Wildlife of Punjab

  • Abohar Wildlife Sanctuary :- Spreads over an area of 186.5 Sq. Kms. in Ferozepur District. The entire area of the sanctuary belongs to private farmlands belonging to thirteen Bishnoi Villages.
  • Bir Aishwan :- Bir Aishwan is one of the most important first declared Wildlife Sanctuaries in Punjab. The management history of Bir Aishwan dates back to 1952 when it was first notified as a Wildlife Sanctuary (WLS).
  • Bir Bhadson :- Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the largest Protected Areas of Punjab falling in district Patiala which was also used by the erstwhile rulers of Patiala for hunting and shooting.
  • Bir Gurdialpura :- Wildlife Sanctuary was one of the important hunting reserves of the erstwhile rulers of Patiala state. It was declared a protected forest and then as a sanctuary under the Fauna of Patiala Act.
